Micro-Grid – Tunisia
Study and development of a Micro-Grid with application in the Agricultural Field. One Big System called “Central” with 3kWp PV, 6kVA Hybrid inverter and 5kWh LIFePO4 battery pack is in charge to create one grid in 220V 50Hz. The Central System with JUA Control Board is able to manage other 4 Systems called “Satellites”: 4 Solar Hybrid Inverters with a secondary battery pack of 2.4kWh. The Central can charge the batteries for the 3kWp PV filed and form excess energy of the other 4 Satellites Systems. Thanks to JUA Control Board Software it is possible to control the system remotely and limit the energy production of the Satellites when the battery is fully charged.
JUA at Micro-Grid Academy
In June 2020 JUA took part in the Micro-Grid Academy course RenewABLE Energy Systems for Covid Health Centers, coordinated by RES4Africa Foundation, where AVSI Foundation and University of Rome La Sapienza were project leaders. During the Academy, JUA technical team analyzed the consumption data from 11 Health Centers operating by AVSI, a non-profit organization founded in 1972, which implements development and humanitarian aid projects in 33 countries, including Italy. After a preliminary sizing JUA carried out a feasibility study for each health center and a first pilot project is currently in the preparation stage for implementation. In particular, the first Pilot Project will be focused on empowering the Juja Farm Health Center, Kiambu County, Kenya. For the rest of Africa, practically everywhere, there are constant #black-outs. #Marocco is an exception, nearly reaching European standards. #Electricity demand is soaring, and where you have 0 kWh, you’re stuck in the Middle Ages, rather than the digital age and 5G. On April 12, 2017, Aliyu Umar, 27, began his day, carefully preparing a charcoal fire with which he would prepare breakfast of noodles, bread, fried eggs and tea for his early morning customers. His makeshift shop was a hotspot for residents of Unguwar Hausawa community, in Nyanya, a suburb of Abuja. When they needed a light breakfast or dinner, Mr Umar’s shop was the destination. Mr Umar came to Abuja from Sokoto State five years ago. It was rough for him in the first few months, switching trades, before he finally settled for food vending. Nearby, a faulty high-tension power cable passing overhead his shop and two residential buildings were being repaired that morning by the staff of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, but the men carried out a bad job because later that day one of the cables was left hanging loose – dangerously. Concerned residents in the area observed that one of the cables was frayed and could fall on any of their buildings. With approximately 840 million people still without electricity access, the world is failing to meet energy targets in the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. Globally, it was deemed as one of the most important indicators for measuring livelihood quality with the world aiming to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services by 2030. As one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, ASEAN is also aiming for improved electricity access as one of the key goals under the ASEAN Plan of Action of Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016-2025 to achieve energy security, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability for all. Zimbabwe – Govt mulls solar systems for public health facilities
Nesia Mhaka Herald Correspondent Government will soon start installing solar systems in all its urban and rural hospitals and clinics to mitigate challenges of power cuts and high costs involved in running generators, Energy and Power Development Minister Fortune Chasi has said. Most health centres rely on generators for power, which is not sustainable owing to high costs of fuel and uncertainty over the availability of power supplies to run their big machines. Progress in rolling out of national power grids has stalled across Africa
Three years ago the African Development Bank launched an initiative to speed up the supply of electricity in Africa in 2016. Launching the New Deal on Energy for Africa, the bank’s President Akinwumi Adesina, remarked: Africa is tired of being in the dark. As countries strive to grow their economies, how can we effectively and efficiently balance people’s need for access to reliable and affordable energy while ensuring that we continue to reduce global emissions? As the signatory states of the Paris agreement seek to meet their emission-reduction targets, the integration of renewable energy sources will continue to increase; the nationally determined contributions (NDC) pledged at Paris have proven inadequate to meet climate goals, and the updated targets will require 3.3 times the current global capacity.
