0 kWh, you’re stuck in the Middle Ages

#Africa consumes about the same amount of energy as the state of #NewYork on its own. just some topics quickly touched on by Professor Romano Prodi, former President of the European Commission In the central section of the continent, there is almost a total lack of electricity. For the rest of Africa, practically everywhere, there are constant #black-outs. #Marocco is an exception, nearly reaching European standards. #Electricity demand is soaring, and where you have 0 kWh, you’re stuck in the Middle Ages, rather than the digital age and 5G. These are just some topics quickly touched on by Professor Romano Prodi, who was Italian Prime Minister twice and former President of the European Commission, and still Special Envoy of the #UN Secretary General for the #Sahel region. My opinion is that the African market is already ready for #solar with #storage. The price per kWh of solar plus storage (LCOE) for the end consumer is today equal to or less than that taken from the national grid, when it’s available. Diesel generators, in terms of price, were already beaten years ago. However, there is the need for local economic activities to see

Dirty fuels kill millions as investment in clean cooking runs short

04.12.2019. , Nita Bhalla Dirty fuels kill millions as an investment in clean cooking runs short Three billion people cook with dirty fuels on open fires or stoves that produce high levels of carbon monoxide, killing four million people annually Meagre investment is hindering countries' ability to meet a global target to ensure universal access to clean, modern cooking fuel by 2030 and end the millions of deaths caused by indoor pollution every year, say clean energy experts. Three billion people globally cook with dirty solid fuels such as charcoal and wood on open fires or traditional stoves that produce high levels of carbon monoxide, killing four million people annually, says the World Health Organization. The use of dirty fuels for cooking also contributes to deforestation and climate change - accounting for approximately 2 percent of global carbon emissions, equivalent to annual air travel emissions, according to the World Bank. Businesses developing solutions ranging from energy-efficient cooking stoves to biomass renewable fuels have mushroomed in recent years, but many lack funds to offer affordable products to poor communities in the developing world. "No one's life should be limited by the way they cook, yet globally three billion people depend on

How Nigerians suffer from poor electricity regulation

On April 12, 2017, Aliyu Umar, 27, began his day, carefully preparing a charcoal fire with which he would prepare breakfast of noodles, bread, fried eggs and tea for his early morning customers. His makeshift shop was a hotspot for residents of Unguwar Hausawa community, in Nyanya, a suburb of Abuja. When they needed a light breakfast or dinner, Mr Umar’s shop was the destination. Mr Umar came to Abuja from Sokoto State five years ago. It was rough for him in the first few months, switching trades, before he finally settled for food vending. Nearby, a faulty high-tension power cable passing overhead his shop and two residential buildings were being repaired that morning by the staff of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, but the men carried out a bad job because later that day one of the cables was left hanging loose – dangerously. Concerned residents in the area observed that one of the cables was frayed and could fall on any of their buildings. So, a call was placed to the AEDC office to fix the problem. continue here : https://www.sun-connect-news.org/articles/market/details/how-nigerians-suffer-from-poor-electricity-regulation/

It’s about more than just electricity

With approximately 840 million people still without electricity access, the world is failing to meet energy targets in the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. Globally, it was deemed as one of the most important indicators for measuring livelihood quality with the world aiming to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services by 2030. As one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, ASEAN is also aiming for improved electricity access as one of the key goals under the ASEAN Plan of Action of Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016-2025 to achieve energy security, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability for all. Despite a noticeable disparity and different challenges faced by Member States, huge efforts are being made to ensure electricity access. Subsequently, there is a significant reduction from 190 million in 2005 to only 100 million people in 2019 left without electricity access. read more at : https://theaseanpost.com/article/its-about-more-just-electricity

Zimbabwe – Govt mulls solar systems for public health facilities

Nesia Mhaka Herald Correspondent Government will soon start installing solar systems in all its urban and rural hospitals and clinics to mitigate challenges of power cuts and high costs involved in running generators, Energy and Power Development Minister Fortune Chasi has said. Most health centres rely on generators for power, which is not sustainable owing to high costs of fuel and uncertainty over the availability of power supplies to run their big machines. The solar project will enable public health facilities nationwide to offer improved round-the-clock service to patients aided by a reliable source of clean energy. Speaking at Chitungwiza Central Hospital on Tuesday, Minister Chasi said most generators given to medical centres, especially in rural areas, were no longer functional, while the few that were still functional were not being used due to the unavailability of fuel. read more at : https://www.thezimbabwedaily.com/news/381770-govt-mulls-solar-systems-for-public-health-facilities.html "Quisque eleifend ac magna eu sodales. Progress in rolling out of national power grids has stalled across Africa

Three years ago the African Development Bank launched an initiative to speed up the supply of electricity in Africa in 2016. Launching the New Deal on Energy for Africa, the bank’s President Akinwumi Adesina, remarked: Africa is tired of being in the dark. Other high-profile initiatives – including Power Africa and Sustainable Energy for All – have also prioritised electricity for Africans. But on-the-ground observation and interviews throughout Africa suggest that the United Nations’ development goal of providing “access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” remains a distant dream for many. Can emerging economies leapfrog the energy transition?

09.01.2020, Neel Tamhane,  Solar Project Lead , SPACE10 Can emerging economies leapfrog the energy transition? Growing demand for power in the developing world presents an opportunity New technologies mean this demand can be met in a sustainable way Renewables could also mean greater independence for these countries Around half of current total global carbon emissions are a result of electricity and heat production. At the same time, there are still more 860 million people across the globe that lack access to energy. As countries strive to grow their economies, how can we effectively and efficiently balance people’s need for access to reliable and affordable energy while ensuring that we continue to reduce global emissions? As the signatory states of the Paris agreement seek to meet their emission-reduction targets, the integration of renewable energy sources will continue to increase; the nationally determined contributions (NDC) pledged at Paris have proven inadequate to meet climate goals, and the updated targets will require 3.3 times the current global capacity. A decarbonized grid in the near future seems very possible, especially with the falling costs of solar PV and wind energy, coupled with the rapid advancements in energy-storage technologies. "Quisque eleifend ac magna eu sodales.
